Bile acids are substances made by our liver and stored in the gall bladder. Traditionally, we thought their only job was to help digest fats. But now we know that bile acids also act as powerful signalling molecules, influencing metabolism, inflammation and even energy expenditure.
Two key receptors respond to bile acids: FXR, short for Farnesoid X Receptor, and TGR5, also known as G-protein-coupled bile acid receptor 1.
