Post-Bariatric (Weight Loss) Surgery

Post-Bariatric (Weight Loss) Surgery

There are several weight loss surgeries being performed worldwide.  They may vary from a simple gastric balloon insertion to invasive surgeries including:

  • Intragastric balloon
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Gastric Bypass surgery

Weight loss surgery is only a tool for long term weight loss. Most people benefit from it if they have good support following the surgery. However research shows weight regain after weight loss surgery is very common. Weight regain is encountered more often with gastric band than with gastric bypass surgery. There are several reasons for weight regain following weight loss surgery including problems directly related to the surgical procedure like:

  • Pouch dilatation
  • Anastomotic dilatation
  • Problems with gastric band
  • Fistula due to staple line breakdown

In addition there may be problems unrelated to surgery which could lead to weight regain including:

  1. Endocrine abnormalities
  2. Adaption to the food
  3. Psychological reasons
  4. Increased emotional eating
  5. Medications
  6. Recurrent dumping and many more ….
