Serotonin, or 5-hydroxytryptamine, is a monoamine neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood, appetite, sleep, and emotional stability.

It is widely associated with brain function, as only around 1-2% of serotonin is produced in the brain. Up to 90% is synthesised in the gut and released into the circulation, influencing both physical and emotional health.
