Post-Bariatric (Weight Loss) Surgery

There are several weight-loss surgeries being performed worldwide. They may vary from a simple gastric balloon insertion to invasive surgeries including:

  • Intragastric balloon
  • Gastric band
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Gastric Bypass surgery
  • Duodenal switch or biliopancreatic diversion
  • Banded bypass

Weight loss surgery is only a tool for long term weight loss. Most people benefit from it if they have good support, following the surgery. However, research shows weight regain after weight loss surgery which is very common. Weight regain is encountered more often with gastric band than with gastric bypass surgery.

What are the reasons for weight regain after weight loss surgery?

There are several reasons for weight regain following weight loss surgery, which includes problems directly related to the surgical procedure like:

  • Pouch dilatation
  • Anastomotic dilatation
  • Problems with gastric band
  • Fistula due to staple line breakdown
  • Recurrent dumping

Reasons for weight regain not directly related to surgery include:

  1. Endocrine abnormalities
  2. Adaption to the food
  3. Psychological reasons
  4. Increased emotional eating
  5. Medications
  6. Alcohol addiction
  7. Body image problems and many more ….

What are the consequences of not dealing with weight regain after weight loss surgery?

If you do not address weight regain after you have had weight loss surgery, you may go back to your usual weight. Some people gain more weight than they have lost.

Weight regain especially after weight loss surgery has a serious impact on psychology and self-esteem. In addition, with increasing weight, you are likely to develop weight related medical problems like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, hypertension and other medical problems.
