WHAT IS Mounjaro®?

Mounjaro® has been authorised for weight management use in the UK. The approval for weight management also comes from the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) as well as the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is an injectable prescription medicine that is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a dual-acting incretin mimetic that works by mimicking the effects of two natural hormones, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). GIP and GLP-1 help to control blood sugar levels by increasing insulin secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and suppressing glucagon secretion.

Mounjaro® works by mimicking the effects of two natural hormones, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). These hormones help to control blood sugar levels by increasing insulin secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and suppressing glucagon secretion.

Increasing insulin secretion: Mounjaro® stimulates the release of insulin from the pancreas, which helps to lower blood sugar levels.

Slowing gastric emptying: Mounjaro® slows down the movement of food from the stomach into the small intestine, which helps you feel full for longer and eat less.

Suppressing glucagon secretion: Suppressing glucagon secretion: Mounjaro® reduces the release of glucagon from the pancreas, which helps to prevent the liver from releasing too much sugar into the bloodstream.
