An intimate symptom can be an important whole-health signal

Erectile dysfunction may be linked with vascular disease, diabetes, blood pressure, sleep, medicines, hormones or psychological wellbeing. We assess the cause rather than assuming low testosterone or weight is responsible.

What's actually happening

Erections depend on blood flow, nerves, hormones and psychological context. Diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, sleep apnoea, depression and some medicines can all contribute.

Because the penile arteries are small, new erectile dysfunction can sometimes precede other cardiovascular symptoms. It is an opportunity for a health review, not a reason for shame.

Why it's harder than it looks

Testosterone treatment is considered only where compatible symptoms and confirmed biochemical deficiency are present, after contraindications and fertility plans are reviewed.

It will not treat every cause of erectile dysfunction, and starting it without a proper diagnosis can obscure the real issue.

What we look at

We discuss when symptoms began, morning erections, libido, relationship and psychological factors, alcohol, smoking and medicines. Blood pressure and cardiovascular risk are considered alongside glucose and lipids.

Hormone tests are used where symptoms make them relevant. A low testosterone result normally needs confirmation with an appropriately timed repeat test.

  • Glucose, lipids and sleep
  • Medication and lifestyle factors
  • Hormone testing when indicated

What can change

Improving fitness, weight, sleep, glucose and blood pressure may help erectile function and broader health. Licensed erectile-dysfunction medicines may also be discussed when safe.

PDE-5 medicines are not suitable with nitrates and need an appropriate cardiovascular review. Treatment bought outside regulated care may be counterfeit or unsafe.

Pain, penile curvature, testicular change or fertility concerns may need urology or andrology input. New symptoms with significant cardiovascular risk may need prompt primary or cardiac assessment.

We coordinate care while preserving privacy and ensuring an underlying condition is not missed.

What happens next

The next step

Understanding what is driving your weight takes a proper assessment — your history, the other conditions you live with, the medicines you already take, and what has been tried before.

Where obesity is complex, Dr Raj may recommend the Specialist Weight Management Plan: our most intensive option, for the most complex cases. Not everyone needs it. For others, consultations and review alone are enough, and what you are offered depends on what is actually going on.

Care is delivered through our London and Chennai clinics.
